Emergency Medical Responder Certification Requirements
Emergency Medical Responder Application for Certification or Recertification
Purpose: This course provides the student with the basic life support skills and knowledge to assess, stabilize, and monitor the pre-hospital patient. Some of the topics this course covers are airway management, CPR/AED, patient assessment, and trauma management. This course is intended for those individuals who respond to pre-hospital situations and must manage the patient until basic life support or paramedic units arrive or the patient can be transferred to an individual with more advanced levels of training. This course prepares the student to take the National Registry Emergency Medical Responder written Exam and, if successfully completed, obtain an Emergency Medical Responder certification with a two-year renewal option. Recertification for Emergency Medical Responders holding a State of Delaware and/or a National Registry Emergency Medical Responder certification requires a 12-hour refresher every two (2) years.
Content: As an Emergency Medical Responder you will play an important role in initial patient care with trauma and medical patient care, semi-automated external defibrillation (AED), vital signs, airway management, and oxygen therapy. You will work collaboratively with EMTs and paramedics in the prehospital setting.
Audience: This course is intended for those individuals who respond to pre-hospital situations and must manage the patient until pre-hospital units arrive or the patient can be transferred to individuals with more advanced levels of training.
Certification: Personnel successfully completing the Emergency Medical Responder Course may be certified as an Emergency Medical Responder for a two (2) year period.
Perquisites: Must be at least 16 years of age prior to the start of class
Class Limits: Minimum of 10; Maximum of 25 students
This course is available as In-Service training.

Purpose: This course is to re-verify the skills and knowledge of the Emergency Medical Responder in the areas of First Aid, CPR, and AED.
Content: This course consists of airway management, CPR, AED, trauma management, medical
emergencies, emergency operations, obstetrics, and pediatrics.
Audience: This course is intended for any individual currently certified as an Emergency Medical
Responder.
Certification: Personnel successfully completing the Emergency Medical Responder Refresher Course may be recertified as an Emergency Medical Responder for a two (2) year period.
Perquisites: Must hold a current Emergency Medical Responder certification
Class Limits: Minimum of 10; Maximum of 25 students
This course is available as an In-Service training.

Initial Certification:
Complete a 40-Hour Emergency Medical Responder course based on current nationally recognized curriculum
Healthcare Provider certification is included in the DSFS course (expiration date will be the same as Emergency Medical Responder expiration date).
Emergency Medical Responder Application will be completed in the DSFS course. The certificate will be attached to the application along with a copy of the Healthcare Provider Card.
Emergency Medical Responder and Healthcare Provider cards will be sent to individual persons. Sponsoring Company will receive a notification.
Individuals not taking the DSFS course must submit OEMS approved copies of 40 Hour course certificate and Healthcare Provider Card along with their completed Emergency Medical Responder Application.
Certification is good for 2 years.
Complete a 12-hour Emergency Medical Responder Refresher course.
Healthcare Provider certification is included in the DSFS refresher course (expiration date will be the same as First Responder expiration date).
Emergency Medical Responder Application will be completed in the DSFS refresher course. The certificate will be attached to the application along with a copy of the Healthcare Provider Card.
Emergency Medical Responder and Healthcare Provider cards will be sent to individual persons. Sponsoring Company will receive a notification.
Individuals not taking the DSFS course must submit OEMS approved copies of the 12-Hour Refresher course certificate and Healthcare Provider Card along with their completed Emergency Medical Responder Application.
Notification of Emergency Medical Responders expiration will be sent in January.
Emergency Medical Responders have two (2) years to be reinstated and will need to take:
National Registry: National Registry of Emergency Medical Responders is available, but not mandatory in Delaware
